About the zOS system

Postby sfan » Tue 04 Aug 2020, 14:18

Due to the increasing maintenance cost of the Dezhi zOS system, we decided to leave it as is.

In the past 15 years the Dezhi zOS has been providing a friendly environment for mainframers to learn and practice the skills at no cost. Now the older hardware can barely support the ongoing activities and hence some of the disk or RAM become not usable.

I'm hesitate to initialize a fund raising to collect $$$ but I'd like to see how many people are willing to donate.

I need your opinion.

Cheers,
sfan

Please provide me a secure channel for making a donation and I will be happy to contribute! Fandezhi z/OS should be saved!

It would probably require quite a lot. I recall there was a major upgrade not too long after I signed on, and that was 10 years ago. Since then, as far as I know, nothing has been done.

I have the attitude that most consumer electronics have a useful life of 10 years or so, so I can readily believe the last upgrade is pretty much done for. The good news is we don't seem to need more capacity, as in CPU capacity or storage (both RAM and disk), so we could probably get by with roughly what we have now, and that would be much cheaper than 10 years ago!

I agree with JK Zup about a secure channel, but I cannot use Pay Pal. At least for me it would have to be a credit card. Yes, I know you can link a credit card to Pay Pal, but I just do not like the way Pay Pal does business.

Hi; Happy to donate but as retired it will be a limited amount say £50 - 100.

I do have a ADCD version running for os390 v210 and zOS 1.10 (with limited tools), well I do when I power it up on a 24/7 AMD 8 core 16Gb system.
Also run - some what more often a MVS 3.8J system (~TK4.8).

PS don't over read the 8 core bit as it is a AMD 8350.

I don’t know of a secure online portal but I would be willing to mail a cashiers check in US dollars.
